PLASTIPEDIA

Basic encyclopedia of concepts that includes the most technical terms in the plastics industry. With this documentation we try to bring our sector closer to the customer.

A

ABS

Thermoplastic characterized by its shine and impact resistance.

Aesthetic Piece

Decorative, in which its finish has to be impeccable.

B

Backlash

Hole or part of the plastic with negative release. This part of the piece cannot be ejected from the mold without a movement in the mold that frees it, leaving said hole or plastic part free.

C

Chemical

Attack produced by certain substances on plastic. Sometimes it can be used to weld or glue plastic to other elements.

Contraction

Volume loss in plastics when cooling. The plastic piece comes out of the mould at around 45-50º. When cooling, its volume contracts, which can alter the initial measurements. The contraction is considered to have finished 36-48 hours after the piece comes out of the mould. Although in many cases, the difference is imperceptible.

Cavity

Hollow inside the mould. It can be single-cavity or multi-cavity. Each time the mould is opened and closed, one or more pieces are produced respectively.

Chromed

Post-coating given to certain types of plastic to give it a chrome-like finish.

D

Density

Amount of mass contained in a given volume.

Direct injection

The sprue is separated after the injection process.

Draft

Degree of release of the figure that allows the extraction of the piece from the mold.

Drinking/washing trough

Necessary part of the process where the plastic enters the mould and is channelled to fill the part. It is generally crushed and returned to the production process.

E

Erosion

Finished with electro-erosion tool.

F

Fireproof

The general classification is V0, V1 and V2, with V0 being the most restrictive. Quality of certain plastics with additives to be flame retardant and self-extinguishing.

Flame retardant

Additive that prevents or delays plastic from burning.

Food use

Contact with edible items is permitted.

H

HDPE

High density polyethylene.

Hot Casting

When this part remains hot throughout the process, the feed is direct to the piece. It usually leaves a one-point mark on the piece.

I

Industrial Piece

Functional, all its measurements must be in dimension.

Industrial Polishing

Finish for industrial parts, smooth surfaces with some visible irregularities.

Injection defects

  • Suck
  • Filtration burr
  • Gust

IGS/STEP

Standard 3D file types that allow us to view the part, measure, calculate volumes, make prototypes… There are many design programs that work with this type of files: CATIA, Solidworks, Solidedge, etc.

L

Lifter

Solution to prevent backflow through mechanisms in the mold that act when opening and closing the mold.

M

Material inputs

  • SUBMARINE
  • FAN
  • DIRECT…

How the plastic from the sprue enters the cavity:

Máster

Additive that is added to the raw material to alter its characteristics such as:

  • Color
  • Foaming
  • Antistatics

Medical use

Contact with items used in the healthcare sector is permitted.

Mirror Polished

Aesthetic finish that, when the material to be injected is transparent, allows you to see perfectly through it. Example: magazine racks, brochure holders.

Mold

Non-autonomous tool required for the injection process. We fill it with plastic taking the shape of the cavity inside.

Mold finish

Finish given to the surface of the mold.

  • Mirror polishing
  • Textured
  • Industrial…

N

Nitriding

Steels treated to achieve great hardness on their surface.

P

Pretreated

Steels with basic hardness for low-run moulds.

Polished Gloss

Finish for certain aesthetic pieces in which no trace can be seen.

Prototypes

  • Steriolithography
  • Machining
  • Folding

Example that is done prior to the manufacture of the mold to see its operation, measurements, behavior… they can be manufactured in different types:

Pull

Solution to prevent backflow through mechanisms in the mold that act through an independent hydraulic system.

R

Recovered/recycled

Thermoplastic that has been injected several times.

S

Standard Piece

Common part, it is not worth investing in a mold. That investment has already been made and is being attempted to be made profitable by selling it to different clients.

Specific Piece

We need to manufacture it because it is not on the market.

Submarine injection

Sprue that separates from the piece during the ejection process.

T

Thermosetting

Infusible and insoluble polymers whose shape is permanently fixed.

Thermoplastic

Plastic that melts at a hot temperature and hardens when cooled, and this process can occur several times.

Tempered

Steels treated to achieve great hardness throughout their volume.

Texturing

Chemical finish that gives the piece a certain uniform texture.

U

Ultrasounds

Method of gluing pieces together by welding them using microvibrations.

UL ROHS CE Marked

Different regulations that must be complied with in certain sectors.

V

Vulcanized

Alternative system with which we can work with plastic.

W

Washing/drinking fountain

Necessary part of the process where the plastic enters the mould and is channelled to fill the part. It is generally crushed and returned to the production process.
